Solution Highlight: ISEC7 SPHERE IoT for Smart Buttons
Editor's note, October 2026: This article was first published in February 2021. The smart button integration has since grown into broader IoT support in ISEC7 SPHERE, including LoRaWAN devices with on-premises ChirpStack network servers and notifications through channels such as BlackBerry AtHoc, Microsoft Teams and ServiceNow. Building on the architecture of ISEC7 SPHERE, our mobility management and monitoring solution, our team has extended its capabilities to the IoT ecosystem. We are proud to announce ISEC7 SPHERE IoT for Smart Buttons, which can be configured to alert a predefined list of recipients at the press of a button or when a GPS location changes. In combination with the BlackBerry AtHoc crisis communication platform, our solution can push alerts out to those recipients.
ISEC7 SPHERE IoT
ISEC7 SPHERE is a holistic digital workplace and mobile service management and monitoring solution that covers all aspects of daily operations in your mobile infrastructure. It keeps evolving around the needs of our customers, and with ISEC7 SPHERE IoT it now also supports Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The smart button integration was first announced with ISEC7 SPHERE 20.1.0.
BlackBerry AtHoc
BlackBerry AtHoc is a crisis communication solution for emergency mass notification. Emergency managers can, for example, alert all or selected employees to situations such as severe weather or imminent danger to keep them safe.
How ISEC7 SPHERE IoT for Smart Buttons works with BlackBerry AtHoc
ISEC7 SPHERE takes a significant step into the Internet of Things with a new feature: sending BlackBerry AtHoc alerts triggered by the press of a smart button.
ISEC7 SPHERE IoT acts as a bridge between the smart button ecosystem and BlackBerry AtHoc, so that triggers from that ecosystem can be actioned by BlackBerry AtHoc. How these devices communicate is explained in our IoT series, starting with Demystifying Technology: Internet of Things (IoT) and continuing with short-range and long-range communications, including LoRaWAN, and the conclusion.
Use cases
With IoT devices integrated in more and more sectors such as industry, transportation, healthcare and law enforcement, the possible use cases are many.
Healthcare
- Wall-mounted button: a bedside button that lets healthcare staff request assistance in a security or medical emergency
- Staff panic button: for healthcare staff dealing with difficult or dangerous patients
Field workers
- Worker in distress: call for help without fumbling with a phone
- Worker tracking: real-time location information for teams deployed in the field
Law enforcement
- Discreet panic button: for front-line officers in situations where they need to stay incognito
- Team location: assigned to each officer, so command can locate them as needed and respond better to any incident
