Assess Your Mobility Vendor Performance | ISEC7

Mobility moves fast, and an infrastructure that fit your needs three years ago may not fit them today. Your renewal anniversary is the right moment to review your current deployment and check whether your vendor still serves both your present and your future needs.

Review your vendor every two to three years

Every two to three years, make assessing your vendor a priority. Measure it against the needs and goals you have set, then decide whether your current UEM vendor can still meet them or whether it is time to look at others.

The market itself does not stand still. Since this post first appeared, Ivanti has taken over MobileIron, and VMware's end-user computing business, including Workspace ONE, now operates as Omnissa. Changes like these affect roadmaps, licensing and support, which is one more reason not to treat a renewal as a formality.

Save money

Software licensing is a practical example that applies to everyone. Before you renew, review your environment to see which types of devices and services are actually in use. It is also a good time for some house cleaning: you may be surprised how many licenses are still assigned to devices that stopped working long ago. Based on that, pick the license type that matches your goals and your price point.

Added-value services are another example. Most UEM vendors now focus on cybersecurity and offer Mobile Threat Defense (MTD) and Zero Trust capabilities. Take that into account if you plan to add endpoint protection. Compare what your current vendor offers with the alternatives, looking not only at functionality but also at ease of integration and total cost.

Make sure the solution fully meets your needs

Your UEM vendor may have what you need, but not necessarily at the level you need it. Some vendors are stronger in endpoint management, others in mobile defense and protection. Every vendor may claim a turnkey solution, so look closely at how each one actually delivers its services.

Don't be afraid to combine solutions

Don't be complacent about vendor selection. Many organizations stay with their current vendor because it is easy, even when an integration of solutions from several vendors would suit them better. Staying put for convenience can lead to extra capital expenditure later, when you have to buy an additional product to cover a business need after all.

If a change is the right call, plan it as a project. Devices can usually move in waves while the old and new platforms run side by side, as described in UEM migration without downtime.

Keep your stakeholders informed

Whether the request comes from the IT team or from senior management, switching solutions is a major decision. It reaches far beyond the IT department and involves the whole decision-making chain, so keep your stakeholders informed about every change. Who carries that responsibility is the subject of the final step, accountability in your digital workspace.
